The College of Environmental Science and Engineering was established in July 2024 based on the inclusion of the "Environmental Ecological Engineering" major in the original School of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering (undergraduate enrollment in 2020), and the inclusion of the "Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering" major in the original School of Surveying and Municipal Engineering (undergraduate enrollment in 2015). There are currently over 40 faculty members, including more than 30 full-time teachers; 5 professors (researchers) and 12 associate professors (senior engineers); Nearly 30 doctors. The professional background covers various disciplines such as environmental engineering, environmental science, and municipal engineering. One young outstanding talent selected for the Zhejiang Province Leading Talent Training Program, one provincial expert in Five Water Co treatment, and three provincial experts in water conservation. There are currently 698 undergraduate students enrolled, and more than 20 master's students are jointly trained with Zhejiang University, Zhejiang University of Technology, China University of Metrology, Zhejiang Ocean University, Lanzhou University of Technology and other universities.
The college has established professional teaching and research laboratories such as "Environmental Ecological Monitoring Laboratory", "Basic Chemistry Laboratory", "Biochemistry Laboratory", "Water Environment Laboratory", "Water Treatment Microbial Laboratory", "Reservoir Algae Bloom Prevention and Control Laboratory", "Lake Reservoir Ecology and Rural Drinking Water Safety Guarantee Laboratory", "Water Environment Governance and Resource Utilization Laboratory", and "Building Water Supply and Drainage Simulation Laboratory".
The college has two research institutes, namely the "Coastal Ecological Barrier Research Institute" and the "Water Security and Ecological Environment Research Institute"; In the past 5 years, we have won 2 second-class science and technology awards from the National Industry Association and over 20 provincial-level A-level competition awards, including the first prize in the Zhejiang Province "Challenge Cup" competition; Hosted 3 national level projects, 7 provincial-level projects, nearly 30 horizontal projects, published over 60 papers, including 36 SCI indexed papers, and authorized 10 invention patents.
Subject direction
In response to the main environmental problems in China, especially in our province's river basins, cities, river networks, as well as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, we will study the evolution laws of water environment and water ecology from the perspective of river basins, formulate strategies, plans, and layouts for pollutant control, water pollution control, and ecological restoration for the overall strategy of the river basin, and develop pollution source control and water quality improvement technologies that meet the requirements of water conservancy and ecological function coordination. We will form three disciplinary directions: regional environmental monitoring and evaluation, river basin water environment governance and water ecological restoration, and water pollution control and resource utilization.
(1) Regional environmental monitoring and assessment
Mainly monitoring and evaluating regional environmental quality through various means, grasping the current situation and changing trends of regional environmental quality. Key research areas include: (1) monitoring methods and technical means for regional atmosphere, water bodies, soil, organisms, etc., including on-site monitoring, laboratory analysis, and remote sensing monitoring technologies; (2) Study the evaluation index system for air quality, water quality, soil quality, biology, and other aspects in the research area, and assess the environmental health status and changing trends in the region; (3) Predict and evaluate the risks of environmental pollution and damage, reveal the causes and mechanisms of environmental problems, and propose prevention and response measures.
(2) Watershed water environment governance and water ecological restoration
Mainly including the environmental effects of new pollutants, simulation of watershed water environmental processes, and restoration of watershed water ecosystems. Focus on conducting the following research: (1) Study the impact of new pollutants on water environment, evaluate their impact on ecosystems, and provide scientific basis for formulating governance measures; (2) By establishing mathematical models and computer simulations, predicting and evaluating the changes in water environment, providing support for management and decision-making; (3) Research on how to restore and enhance the functionality and stability of aquatic ecosystems through ecological engineering and technological means.
(3) Water pollution control and resource utilization
This mainly includes efficient sewage biological treatment and its control technology, pollutant transformation mechanism and key technologies in water pollution control process, as well as the development and application of new water treatment functional materials. Focus on conducting the following research: (1) Efficient sewage biological treatment and its control technology. Using aerobic granular sludge as a starting point, optimize reaction conditions to promote rapid cultivation and maintain long-term stability of particles, and explore the operating conditions and mechanisms of sludge granulation in continuous flow reactors. (2) The mechanism and key technologies of pollutant transformation in the process of water pollution control. On the basis of systematically studying the migration laws and transformation mechanisms of pollutants, continuous innovation in water pollution control and sewage resource utilization technologies is carried out, forming new technological processes suitable for urban sewage treatment, reclaimed water reuse, rural sewage treatment, industrial wastewater treatment and reuse. (3) Development and application of new water treatment functional materials. Mainly research and develop new water treatment functional materials such as nanofiltration membranes and biochar, and conduct application research.
